3 Hacks for Figuring Out What You Want in Life

Whenever I have a career discussion with my manager, she asks me what do I want to do/where do I want to go.  I have no clue.  I know what I like/don’t like, and I have always made the best of being picked up and plopped into another area thanks to re-orgs, but personally, I’m very adaptable.

In listening to this Rachel Hollis podcast, she let’s me know that it’s okay…but also warns of stagnation.  Below are her 3 hacks summarized.  I highly recommend listening to the podcast if this topic interests you.

Hack 1:  Identifying what you don’t want can give insight to what you want.  Rachael gave the example that she doesn’t like devoting her time for other’s agenda; hence, she’s an entrepreneur.

Hack 2:  Admitting who you are jealous of and why.  Identifying who you are jealous of will give you insight as to what you are craving.

Hack 3:  If I was <someone you admire who has a lot resources>, what would I be doing different.  Most people have a vision and get stuck on the how to make the vision reality.  When you focus on someone who has all the resources, you assume anything is possible for that person.  When you have the mindset that anything is possible, you are more likely to brainstorm the how with what you have.

  1. What a nice list of hacks, and figuring out what you _don’t_ want is such a great way of figuring out what you _do_ want. I myself had changed careers so many times, and each failed attempt has only shown me what I actually want. Anyway, thanks for this post!
