As I continued reading New Minimalism, I see their decluttering method is similar to Maire Kondo’s; they declutter by category, not by room. I find this method overwhelming. I live in a 2-story house (3 story if you include the basement).
I didn’t finish Marie’s book because I got stuck on paper—I have 3 floors, each containing it’s own nook and cranny for paper. I would have to go through 9 rooms (excluding the bathrooms) to find all the paper in my house. I understand the premise of focusing on categories (keeping all paper in one place), but working full time, the close ties I have to family, in addition to focusing on experiences that bring me happiness, and knowing I only 1,609 weeks of life left, I just can’t seem to do it. So, I’m back to where I started, by tossing this book with all the others.
I don’t want to discourage anyone from reading it though, the authors have valuable insight to different ways of thinking about your stuff, and how they define new minimalism truly resonates with my direction. It’s the method that I just can’t seem to commit to at this time of my life.
It feels good not to force myself to follow a method I don’t feel would serve me and having my values established takes the guilt away. I will begin my decluttering journey next week using the room-by-room method.
Is your house in perfect order? Have you used Marie Kondo’s method—or another method to get rid of the stuff that no longer serves you? I’d love to hear about it as I venture on my own journey.

I like to declutter by room too. I find it exhausting to do it by category. I’ve been trying to declutter recently but I have to admit it’s not been easy.

Thank you! I mean, I get the logic of doing it by category, but it’s just too much. Maybe it would make sense to do that after I clear out all of this clutter first. 😂

Yeah, I get categories but I just find it hard to go around the house and find things from every room lol. It’s just easier to deal with one room at a time. Lol, that may be it maybe we just have too much clutter at the moment!

The MK method really did work. But my house was so big I actually got sick tackling the whole of it, lol. Just too much. I realized long ago that the piles are a reflection of my indecisiveness. It isn’t the physical act of putting things away that is hard so much as the sharp decisions to make as to what (and how soon) they will serve their purpose where.

Yes, apparently the MK method works for many, ot just doesn’t make sense for me. I understand what you mean on deciding. Another thing, is the important interruptions that come up and leave little time to focus on decluttering. Ugh…some day I’ll get to it! 🤞
