What to Do When Your Brain Needs a Break

Focusing is a good thing.  It organizes your thinking and gives you the ability to get things done.  However, focusing too much can narrow your scope and cloud your judgment. If I find myself overwhelmed with focusing, I’ve found (actually my whole team has found), walking away for several hours can be a great refresh for your soul and mind.

In that time, I do things that I enjoy that don’t require too much concentration.  I like working on crafts, absorbing myself in a good fictional book, coloring or watching tv/a movie followed by a good night’s rest.  I often find the solution typically is right in front of me the next morning.

There are a few other things Catelijne Elzes suggests in her The Benefits of Daydreaming article in the book The Big Book of Less; Finding Joy in Living Lighter, that I would like to try:  Showering (well a long bath for me), gardening, musing out loud, or daydreaming of something that would put happy thoughts into my head.

When you use a lot of brain power and come up empty handed, what do you do to clear your head?
