Self Esteem – Respect from Others

As I continue working on my self-esteem, respect from others is the next focus, but it feels uncomfortable to me, yet it feels important to me.  Best described, it feels very self-centered.

Alex Licherman, MD, uses the word reputation which feels more comfortable to use.  He states friendship and income rely on a good reputation within our network.  This doesn’t sound self-centered; it sounds like a social need.

“…a good reputation smoothes out the journey somewhat, and a bad one causes doors to slam in our face and tests our confidence in ourselves.”

Alex Licherman, MD

Dr. Neha Mehta believes it’s important to identify why others may disrespect you to improve your reputation.  He lists 4 potential reasons on why people may not respect you, 1 of which I see relatable to me (People Take You Too Casually and Lightly).  His article provides tips to influence how others see you.  I want to focus on taking others’ remarks positively.

Jesicka Labud states to improve your reputation, you need to focus on others, not just yourself. The tips she listed that I want to keep in mind are:

  • Distinguish kindness from always having to do things for people.
  • Provide value (when speaking)
  • Don’t believe the self-talk.
  • Speak up when you’re mistreated

Max Klein had a few tips, one of which I struggle with…Be Decisive (means you are confident; confidence earns respect when used appropriately).

And a final recommendation I want to be aware of is what Alex Lickerman, MD stated, “Take consistent action that embodies the characteristics you want others to associate with you.”
